Life Skills: Integrity – Your Support System is a Valuable Aid

Teaching character and life skills to students

When we are growing into adulthood, finding our way, one of the most important things that we have is our friends.  All of us have those special people in our lives that we love to talk to and hang out with.  There is a saying that goes with that that says;  “You are who you hang out with.”  Choosing our friends has a great affect on our ability to maintaining our integrity to our morals, values and ethics as well as reaching our goals.

Surrounding ourselves with those that will “expect more from us that we do ourselves”, they will always be an inspiration for being our best and in fact even ‘master’ our life.  Who are the people that can do that for us and with us?  It is going to include those around us that love us and have our best interest at heart, like our parents, friends and other trusted adults who may be an inspiration to you.  Those other adults like teachers, coaches, religious mentor, musicians can help us look at things from different viewpoints and keep us on a good track.

But how can we be sure our friends have our best interest at heart?

  • If at anytime your ‘friends’ ask you to change yourself like your clothes, language, values or morals, or to do other things to fit in with them you may need a new group of friends.
  • If at anytime your ‘friends’ ask you to do drugs with them, steal, fight, treat others mean, you may need to find a new group of friends.
  • If at any time you feel like you are being used, manipulated or changed from who you are, you may need to find a new group of friends.
  • If you feel like your life is out of control, boxed in, not allowed to have other friends or you are not reaching the goals that you have written down, you may need a new group of friends.

Surround yourself with a support system that you can rely on and that shares your morals, values and ethics and you will be much more likely to keep your integrity to yourself.

3 Things I Learned While My Plane Crashed

What would the thoughts be that go through your mind, if you knew that your life was about to come to an end?  What we can be reminded of by someone who went through this experience and lived, can help us to be aware of the preciousness of living our life and being there for others, especially family.  The 3 things this man learned may be the same for you or maybe not.  It does remind us though to pause and ask ourselves … “If I knew I only had a short time to live, how would I live it?”   Here is my reminder – All of us have a short time to live.

Creating a Vision for our Family

A series of post's on leadership in the familyThroughout history in the business world we have seen some great partnerships.  Many times one partner was the visionary and the other one was the nuts and bolts person / investor – who knew how to get things done and make things happen.  Nonetheless as you look at this list we can be sure of one thing – together they had a vision that they agreed on and they could all see exactly what they wanted to accomplish.

  • Thomas Edison & J.P. Morgan & Vanderbilts  (commercial power companies)
  • Wright Brothers (air plane)
  • Sam, Jack, Albert, and Harry Warner (Warner Bro. entertainment)

Building a strong team with your family starts with relationships

The relationships we have with those that we lead, will have an affect on their willingness to want to help us on our projects.  In family life as parents, the relationships we have with our spouse and our children also affect how well the team works together.  The stronger the relationships are, the more understanding there is of one another, and the greater the connection.

While much has been written about building those relationships here are a few guidelines that will make a difference in our family relationships, ultimately building a stronger team.

1.  Know who you are and what your values and goals are.  Your relationships with family members starts with knowing yourself first and then being yourself.

2.  Communication with your children and family, regularly spotlighting the efforts of all to achieve the teams goals and praising with sincerity and accurateness.

3.  Know every family member and what they care about deep inside.  This is especially important for spouses.  If one in the family has a passion for a subject or art,  working together to give time to pursue that will speak volumes to the children.  The team can have varied interest – but all will be set to the tune of achieving their goals.

4.  Live your message by practicing what you preach.  What you value, your ethics and morals will be seen by your children long before they hear your speeches.

5.  Go to where they are, not expecting your children to have the same interest as yourself.  Showing that kind of respect will open any communication barriers and you can find a way to teach from that perspective.  As it was once said, They do not care how much you know, till they know how much you care.

6.  Focus on other family members and you will be loved for your selflessness.  Their love and respect will be returned for many years to come.  Allowing all in the family to be who they are, while working together to reach the goals and fulfill the mission of the family, will create an atmosphere of love and respect.

7.  Believe in them, even when things are not going the way they or you thought that they might.  Recognizing the value of each person as an individual in the family will go a long way to building the communication and respect for each other.

8.  Offer direction and hope to all members of your team.  Ultimately as a leader, parents set the goals of the team.  Once the goals are set, the vision seen, our job as parents is to help all on the team to believe in the outcome and see the possibilities of achieving the goal.

Celebrate often.  As progress on your goals and mission are seen – celebrate the success, giving credit to the team members.

Do Not Neglect Your Family in the Name of Success

Developing our personal meaning of success and then planning and acting on those plans is something that happens for individuals at different times in their lives.  For me I knew what success would mean, helping others and especially young people.  In so doing, as I got older I realized that it meant helping young parents too.

One thing I have learned on this journey though is that most important while on our path is our family.   I have seen some who have sacrificed their own family for reaching personal goals, and quite frankly it is never for the best.  There have been very few people in the world who have been successful without the support of a strong and close family.

Having those strong relationships continue to remind you what is really important.  It was when having our first child that I really started to develop my present idea of what my goals in life were and what success looked like for me.  It is with those relationships that I am really able to enjoy the journey and share the benefits with them.  So if you have a family, be sure that you are not neglecting them as you pursue your goals, career and service to others.
